Amenities at the Sky House
The Sky House provides accommodations for up to 6 people.
The kitchen, dining room, and living room are connected.
The kitchen is equipped with enough dishes and silverware for 6 people, as well as pots and pans, a coffee machine, toaster, blender, refrigerator, oven, and stove with four burners. There are also some condiments available, like salt, sugar, and oil.

The living room has a sleeper sofa couch and a cozy fireplace. As perk, you’re provided with an unlimited amount of wood!
Attached to the living room is a door leading to the deck. It has several chairs, a patio table, and a barbecue. You can enjoy the tranquil sounds of the forest while lounging on the deck!

The bathroom has a shower and bathtub, very hot water (a major plus!), and basic toiletry items.

This cabin features two comfortable bedrooms, one with a private deck, and both with warm comforters and space heaters.

The Sky House features several floor-to-ceiling windows which give guests the opportunity to rejuvenate and recharge while fully immersing themselves in the beauty of the surrounding mountain scenery.
Things to do while staying at the Sky House
Apart from absolute rest and relaxation, there are several activities you can take advantage of during your time at the reserve.
1. Sample the local cuisine.
While you’re welcome to bring your own food, I highly recommend setting some meals aside to try the dishes from the community. In the cabin, you’ll find the menus with the various choices.
It’s important to order the food 24 hours in advance so that the chefs have enough time to prepare it. The ingredients used to make these dishes are of the highest quality. They’re all grown and harvested locally, including the chicken and lamb which are raised right there in the mountains.
2. Explore the mountain trails.
The reserve is comprised of 740,000 square miles of wilderness and 10 kilometers of trails. The host can recommend trails for you based on your interests and fitness level. All of the trails are well-marked and maintained.
In our previous visit, we hiked to Cumbre del Aguila, La Poza, Cascada de las Ranas, Mirador del Atlas, Cumbre del Beso, and Pico de Doria. This time around, we hiked to Mirador del Atlas, Observatorio de Aves, Cascadita del Gorrion, and Cascada de las Ranas.
No matter which trail you decide to go on, you can’t go wrong. They’re all lead you through and to gorgeous places. In any case, be sure to bring comfortable hiking shoes!

3. Barbecue on the deck.
The grill on the deck offers you the opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal with an incredible view. I highly recommend it!
4. Take a horseback riding tour.
Reyes and his team offer private horseback riding tours that can take you anywhere you wish within the reserve. You’ll definitely want to ask them to take you to the waterfall where, on a warm day, you can swim in the natural pool.

5. Participate in a sewing workshop.
Bertha, a seamstress in Tenango, offers classes for those who are interested in learning how to sew.
6. Have a picnic.
There are two picnic spots within the reserve, both of which have a table and chairs. One is located at La Posa (roughly a 20 minute walk from the Sky House), and the other is at La Cascada de las Ranas (around a 30 minute walk, in the opposite direction).
How many days should you spend at the Sky House?
We spent 2 nights and 3 days at the Sky House. If you’re able to spend more time, I recommend you to do so. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
You’ll have complete privacy in the cabin during your stay, however there will be one or more members of the reserve available to assist you in whatever you may need.
You might also receive a few visits from the friendliest dog in the reserve. He is really calm and you’ll find him walking around the cabin from time to time.

Day 1:
On our first day, we met Reyes at a gas station located roughly 40 minutes from the reserve. From there, we followed him into the mountains until we reached the Sky House.

The weather was foggy and a bit cold, so we decided to start up the fireplace and relax.

Niquito brought us dinner that night, which included quesadillas, gorditas hidalguenses, flautas, and tacos filled with potato and squash blossoms. The meals came with beans, rice, soup of the day, tortillas, lemon water, and the desert of the day. Everyone really enjoyed it! The food is homemade and farm fresh.

After dinner, I enjoyed sitting by the fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate.
Day 2:
We woke up to clear skies and the most incredible sunrise on our first morning.

From the deck, you can see the city of Tenango.

After breakfast, we took advantage of the nice weather and went exploring to Observatorio de Aves.
This little cutie followed us for part of the journey. 🙂

Unfortunately, we didn’t see too many birds from the lookout point, but the view was well worth it.

I loved seeing so many flowers in bloom— something we didn’t get to see during our previous visit.

An hour into our hike, the fog started rolling in, so we decided to return to the cabin and light the fireplace.

For dinner, we had a barbecue on the deck.
Day 3:
On our last day, we had breakfast delivered to us by Niquito. We ordered chilaqiiles with egg and green sauce, huevos a la Mexicana (scrambled eggs with tomato and jalapeño).
The breakfast also included handmade tortillas, fresh fruit, pastries from the local bakery, and hot chocolate. The portions were very abundant and just like the dinner from two evenings prior, everything tasted delicious!
Since we were blessed with another clear day, we went on a bit of a longer hike. This time we went to Mirador del Atlas, Cascada de las Ranas, and Cascadita del Gorrion.
During our previous visit, we had fog the entire time so we didn’t get to appreciate the view from Mirador del Atlas, but this time around we got to see it in its full glory.

On the hill to the left, there were a bunch of goats grazing the mountain. Look closely.

Hint: Look for white spots near the top left quadrant of the photo.
We left the reserve in the early afternoon. On our way out, we stopped by these spots along the road to take pictures of the gorgeous landscape.

Best time to visit the Sky House
The best time to visit the Sky House will depend on your preference of weather.
The warmest season begins around the end of March and lasts until June. The coldest months are from the beginning of November and lasts until February. The rainy season begins around the middle of June and lasts until the middle of October, and the dry season begins in mid-October and lasts until mid-June.
We visited the Treehouse, in mid-November and experienced cold (but bearable) temperatures with foggy conditions. We loved the weather because it made us feel like we were in a fairytale—especially hiking through the forest in the fog and then warming up next to a cozy fireplace in a cabin in the trees. There was something very special about that!
On the other hand, we visited the Sky House in mid-January. The weather was slightly cool but not as cold as it was in November, and there was less fog. We loved this climate too because the view from the Sky House is better appreciated on clear days.

| Warmest month: | May |
|---|---|
| Coldest month: | January |
| Rainiest month: | September |
It’s hard to predict the weather when you’re planning a vacation far in advance, so I recommend checking the weather before your visit and bringing the appropriate clothing to ensure you’re comfortable.
For the closest weather estimate, search for the city: Tenango de Doria.
Regardless of the weather, this hidden gem in Mexico is the perfect getaway for those seeking ultimate relaxation.
How to get to the Sky House
The Sky House is located in a very remote area in the mountains. The easiest and best way to get there is by car but other means of transportation can be arranged if driving is not an option for you.
Getting there by car:
To get to the Sky House, you’ll first drive to a gas station in Tepalzingo where you’ll meet the person who will guide you to the private reserve (about 30 km away). After a series of curves and turns on a paved road, you’ll make a left on a dirt road and continue for a short distance.
Any vehicle can access this road without a problem.
There are two parking spots available at the Sky House which connect to the entrance. It makes it easy to carry your luggage if it has wheels and also provides handicap access.
Getting there by bus:
If you don’t have a car, the AirBnB host offers transportation from the Tulancingo bus station to the Sky House and back for an additional cost. I’m not sure what the cost is, but that can be arranged directly with the host.
Where to book your stay at the Sky House
You can book your stay on AirBnB.

The following two cabins are located on the same reserve as the property.

- La Cumbre del Aguila: Located 60 minutes in the mountain and only accessible by foot and horse. This cabin has a 6-person capacity.
They are building a couple of other cabins on the reserve, so it looks like more lodging options will become available in the near future!
